Europe Central Bank Proposes ‘Unattractive’ Rates for Digital Currency
The European Central Bank (ECB) remains open to the idea of a digital euro equivalent but would want to stop citizens holding too much of it. That was the conclusion of a fresh working paper on so-called central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) by Ulrich Bindseil, the bank’s Director General of Market Infrastructure and Payments, on Jan. 3. Binance Debuts Euro Pairs as CZ Says 180 Fiat Currencies Set for 2020
Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has confirmed it will offer euro (EUR) trading against six cryptocurrencies in the platform’s latest fiat expansion. In a blog post on Jan. 3, Binance confirmed trading for EUR pairs would begin at 8am the same day. Users will be able to trade EUR against Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), XRP and Binance Coin (BNB). Binance will also support trading against two stablecoins: Tether (USDT) and its own U.S. dollar-backed token, Binance USD (BUSD). Binance’s Partner Allows Users to Buy Crypto with Credit Card in JPY and CAD
Israeli-based fintech and cryptocurrency firm Simplex now supports two new fiat currencies — the Japanese yen (JPY) and the Canadian dollar (CAD). Kazakhstan’s lawmakers won’t be taxing cryptocurrency mining until the mined crypto is exchanged for fiat money. British Virgin Islands Announce US Dollar-Backed Digital Currency
Blockchain startup LifeLabs announced that it is developing a digital currency dubbed BVI~LIFE in partnership with the British Virgin Islands (BVI). According to a press release on Dec. 3, the currency is part of a broader initiative to grow the local fintech sector and will be presented during the BVI Digital Economy symposium. Cardano’s Payment Gateway for Merchants Is Now Live
The Cardano Foundation, the firm behind the 12th biggest cryptocurrency Cardano (ADA), has launched AdaPay, an ADA payment gateway for merchants. Developed by the Cardano Foundation and enterprise-grade fintech platform Coti, the solution allows merchants to accept ADA payments with “near-instant” settlement in 35 fiat currencies directly in their bank accounts, the firm announced Nov. 27. Kraken, One of Oldest Bitcoin Exchanges, Joins Silvergate Exchange Network
Kraken, one of the largest and oldest Bitcoin (BTC) exchanges in the world, has joined the Silvergate Exchange Network (SEN). By joining SEN, the United States-based cryptocurrency exchange enables its clients to deposit and withdraw U.S. dollars from Silvergate accounts with no fees, the firm announced Nov. 27.
