This blockchain network lets users ‘geomine’ crypto rewards from their smartphones
The XYO Network lets anyone turn their cellphone into an edge node with a proof-of-origin chain and bound witness technology using their partner app, “COIN”. With COIN, users can ‘geomine’ to earn crypto rewards, in exchange for participating in XYO’s decentralized network of devices. XYO describes geomining as the act of exploring and discovering digital items or assets from a real, physical space while sharing relevant location data and interactions with other geominers. In order to earn cryptocurrency, geominers will have to geomine enough in-app ‘COIN’ tokens and then redeem them for ‘XYO Tokens’ or other cryptocurrencies. Recently listed on …

New fund aims to put hundreds of millions toward Algorand DeFi growth
Decentralized finance, or DeFi, has developed significantly over the past two years. The Algorand Foundation has unveiled a new fund positioned to allocate money toward certain DeFi projects looking to build on its native blockchain. The pool of capital is called the Viridis DeFi fund and is headed up by the Algorand Foundation — a group that was responsible for the Algorand blockchain and its ecosystem development. “This fund will provide 150 Million Algo to fuel the significant early growth of the DeFi ecosystem on Algorand,” according to a Friday post on the Algorand Foundation’s website. “The fund will fuel …

SOL price nears $200 after FTX’s Solana-enabled NFT marketplace goes live
Solana (SOL) bulls have largely ignored its overvaluation risks as the blockchain asset goes after another milestone price level. The SOL/USD exchange rate almost reached $200 on Tuesday as investors continued to treat Solana as a long-term competitor to Ethereum, the world’s leading smart contracts platform. More bullish evidence came on Monday after Sam Bankman-Fried, CEO of crypto derivatives platform FTX, announced Solana’s integration into FTX’s upcoming nonfungible token (NFT) marketplace. On Monday, Bankman-Fried revealed that the new marketplace would enable NFT creators and owners to trade their digital arts cross-chain using Solana and Ethereum. The platform would also make …

Ruler and Cover DeFi protocol closes down amid mass developer exit
In a candid open letter, the lead contributor of Cover and Ruler Protocol, “DeFi Ted,” announced the protocol will close its virtual doors in the near future, citing a mass developer exit as the primary reason for the project’s conclusion. Launched earlier this year, the Ethereum-based decentralized finance (DeFi) insurance marketplace enabled users to stake Cover tokens as collateral and receive insurance payouts if their assets in other DeFi protocols are hacked or rug-pulled. In December 2020, the Cover protocol suffered a catastrophic exploit when a hacker minted 40 quintillion tokens, stratospherically increasing the token supply and effectively rendering the …

Decentralized search engine becomes default option on European Android devices
Beginning Sept. 1, decentralized search engine Presearch will be listed as a default option on all new and factory-reset devices sold in the United Kingdom and Europe, a move that could erode Google’s dominance in the search engine market. The decision by Google to list Presearch as a default browser option follows a protracted legal battle with the European Commission over accusations that the technology company used Android to solidify its search engine dominance. In 2018, the European Commission’s antitrust regulator fined Google a record 4.24 billion euros for unfairly limiting competition on smartphone operating systems. In 2019, Google said …

Decentralized exchanges and aggregators drive DeFi growth
As the decentralized finance segment continues to gain steam despite an overall slump in the crypto space, decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and aggregation services have recently shown sustainable growth. Meanwhile, within the DEX segment, aggregation services have made remarkable progress. DeFi still running strong When Bitcoin’s (BTC) exchange rate dropped dramatically in May, some observers feared it could deal a major blow to the entire crypto sector. However, that didn’t happen. A few months later, the industry is still chugging along, and its, arguably, most promising area — decentralized finance — continues to grow. Within DeFi, decentralized exchanges have recently been …

Crypto wallets: An important battlefront to gain wallet share and mind share
Digital wallets are software constructs that mimic physical wallets and provide the functionality of storing, using and categorizing payment instruments. The journey of digital wallets started with payments and morphed to other forms of stubs such as digital passes, tickets and boarding passes. However, crypto wallets attempt to redefine the digital wallet landscape as something more than safe storage of payment and crypto instruments. With more than 100 crypto wallets and growing, this sector in the cryptosphere is getting crowded and adding further complexity to an already fragmented blockchain and digital asset space. As I study this space and try …
