Mobile DeFi and the Shift Toward Self-Sovereignty
Many speculate that mainstream adoption of cryptocurrency is dependent solely on improving ease of access and user experience. In reality, there’s an even bigger obstacle: a mentality shift. Self-sovereignty and personal autonomy are the endgame of this technology, and with that goal comes a significant increase in personal responsibility for one’s funds. This is totally at odds with people’s traditional financial experience so far; the legacy system takes away your autonomy and replaces it with convenience, offering useful tools related to fraud protection and password management. By comparison, cryptocurrencies, decentralized finance and other forms of distributed technology fall on the …

Ethereum 2.0 and EOS Crossing Swords Over Scalability Supremacy
When the EOS network launched in 2018, it looked to be one of the biggest contenders to Ethereum (ETH) — not just in terms of providing a scalable development platform for decentralized apps, or DApps, but also in terms of a well-funded project with great support, and one that could rival Ethereum as the second-ranked cryptocurrency. So far, while EDApps OS is definitely a worthy competitor, it’s hard to argue that it has toppled Ethereum, which houses almost nine times more DApps on its platform than EOS, according to State of the DApps. Nevertheless, EOS remains a top competitor, mainly …

2020 Is Becoming the Year of Staking With Some Major Achievements
Proof-of-work and proof-of-stake have a lot of benefits to offer the community, and the discussion around these algorithms has dominated conversations in the cryptocurrency community. The use of staking will become more widespread this year on the protocol level with Ethereum 2.0’s expected arrival, along with the continued development of Cardano, Tezos and Algorand, ultimately changing the landscape of the future networks and blockchains. On the other side of the protocols is the mad rush for the hyper gains from decentralized finance projects that utilize high yield farming from loans, which will further the adoption of these staking protocols. Put to Good Use: Ethereum Racks Up Serious Numbers to Set Benchmarks
Ethereum’s dominance as the preeminent smart contract blockchain platform has been boosted by the popularity of decentralized finance and decentralized applications tokens in 2020, with ERC-20 tokens now accounting for nearly half of the assets on the blockchain. The smart contract platform has been in existence for just under five years and, in that space of time, has established itself as the blockchain of choice for DApp developers. Adding substance to that claim is data indicating that Ethereum has overtaken Bitcoin as the blockchain with the highest daily settlement value. This is largely due to the sheer amount of capital …

As TikTok ‘Spyware’ Rumor Swirls, Crypto Apps Safety in the Spotlight
Over the past few weeks, TikTok has found itself in hot water over security issues. First, it was axed in India along with 58 Chinese apps for “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner.” Later, it became a major target for Trump’s administration against the backdrop of America’s faltering relationship with China and was even banned for Wells Fargo and Amazon employees, with the latter later retracing the news, saying it did not intend to prohibit using TikTok. While the censure of TikTok’s data collection habits seems to stem from mostly geopolitical reasons — its harshest critics …

DApps Need to Nail Usability to Move From Crypto Niche to Mainstream
From CryptoKitties to Compound, decentralized applications and decentralized finance have become increasingly popular in the blockchain space, but the sector has gone through a fair share of teething problems since DApps first appeared in 2017. DApps were popularized around the same time that Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a monumental surge in value toward the end of 2017. Ethereum quickly established itself as the protocol of choice for blockchain developers to build and launch DApps, and the success of projects such as CryptoKitties proved that people were actively looking to get involved in the space. CryptoKitties was so popular at the time …

Decentralized File Sharing, Explained
Are there decentralized file sharing use cases already in operation? Two examples where IPFS has been used are with Wikipedia and the Android version of the Opera browser. The Turkish government previously attempted to ban Wikipedia, citing it as a national security threat. Hacktivists uploaded a version of Turkish Wikipedia and posted it using IPFS as a way of circumventing the ban. IPFS has also been integrated into the Android version of the Opera web browser as part of its bid to introduce Web 3.0 capabilities. BTFS is integrated into decentralized video streaming network DLive, enabling fast and censorship-resistant livestreaming. …
