DApp transaction volume has topped $270 billion so far in 2020, with 95% of this figure belonging to Ethereum’s DeFi ecosystem, according to DappRadar. That’s an astonishing 1178% increase from last year’s total of $21 billion. The blockchain data provider revealed the figures in its annual DApp Industry Report today, summarizing the highlights and failures of a record-breaking year for DApp-based economics. The report noted that money has been flowing from BTC to ETH throughout the year, resulting in a rise in the price of ETH, from 0.018 BTC on Jan 1. 2020 to its current price of 0.028 BTC. …
The Graph Network launched its mainnet on Dec. 17, allowing developers to easily search, index, use and publish data from public blockchains. This is made possible through a global and open network of Application Programming Interfaces, or APIs, called subgraphs. These form the basis of many of today’s most popular decentralized applications. The transparency of public blockchains is often lauded, but even though they contain a wealth of useful data, querying them for data is not particularly easy. The Graph’s business development lead Tegan Kline describes it as, “kind of like the web without Google.” One may think why this …
Ethereum-powered decentralized applications, or DApps, have attracted more than one million active users over the last 30 days according to analytics platform DappRadar. This milestone comes as interest in decentralized finance, commonly referred to as DeFi, received a second wind, with the number of users growing by 11% in the first 11 days of November. The ten DApps, six of which describe themselves as providing “DeFi and exchange” services, represent more than $21 billion in combined trading volume over the last 30 days. The top three DApps — Crypto.com’s DeFi Swap, Uniswap, and Compound — account for the lion’s share, …
The amount of cryptocurrency and blockchain-related hacks has been decreasing over the course of 2020, a new report claims. According to data analyzed by VPN provider Atlas VPN, the number of hacks in the first half of 2020 dropped more than three times compared to the same period in 2019. The data is part of a report released by Atlas VPN on Oct. 28. According to Atlas VPN, 2019 was a record-breaking year for blockchain hackers that exploited 94 successful attacks in the first half of the year, while in H1 2020 there were 31. Per the report, 2019 as …

A new project says it is delivering the first-ever public oracle system on the TRON network, enabling real-world data to be injected into smart contracts. According to the team behind the Bridge oracle, the lack of this infrastructure is currently a pain point as it limits the blockchain’s use case to a tokenization platform. They believe that the creation of this system is crucial for attracting small businesses who may not have the means, ability or time to create their own dedicated oracles. This could help the Tron (TRX) network progress and expand in the months and years to come. …
An Indian startup has built a decentralized notification protocol dubbed Ethereum Push Notification Service (EPNS) allowing DApps to send push notifications to Ethereum wallet users. Speaking to Cointelegraph, EPNS founder Richa Joshi said that they developed the protocol after finding a striking similarity between how applications operated in the early days of the internet and how they operate on Web 3.0. She explained that Gmail or Orkut did not send notifications in their early days as they do now. Users would have to check back every time to see if they received any new emails or messages. That changed when …
Brian Armstrong, the CEO of United States cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, alleges that Apple is stifling innovation in crypto and sidelining DeFi to protect itself from competition. In a Twitter thread published on Sept. 11, Armstrong doubled down on his earlier claims that Apple continues to block some functionalities for cryptocurrency developers. The CEO alleged that other cryptocurrency firms are “reluctant to speak out on these topics for fear of retaliation,” but that he feels the need to speak out as Coinbase has exhausted regular channels for dialog with Apple and has reached a “dead end.” According to Armstrong, Apple has …
The DeFi frenzy has been making the headlines in the last few months, as crypto exchanges rush to list popular tokens within the decentralized finance sphere. However, another concept called “Elastic Finance” has emerged, which could be the next generation of financial platforms that can use unique supply elastic assets, said an expert. During an interview with Cointelegraph, digital asset protocol firm Ampleforth Foundation CEO Evan Kuo said that Elastic Finance began with its own token, AMPL, a rules-based elastic digital currency that automatically translates price volatility into supply volatility. He said elastic finance represents the category of assets featuring …
A new metric published by DappRadar wants to paint a more reliable picture of how the decentralized finance ecosystem is growing. Called “adjusted TVL,” the metric attempts to clean total value locked readings from any external influence — primarily price increases. Total value locked is often considered a measure of the popularity of a DeFi protocol and the sector as a whole. However, measuring it in U.S. dollars means that any token price increase will also drive TVL up — even though no new assets were committed to the protocol. Researchers noted that while this may inflate the metric in …
Coinbase and Apple are still not getting along months after Coinbase warned customers it might remove an application from the Apple Store. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong tweeted on August 22 that Apple continues to block some functionalities for cryptocurrencies, including being able to earn money and unrestricted decentralized applications (dApp) browsers. He said: “Apple has been very restrictive and hostile to cryptocurrency over the years. They're still blocking some functionality right now, including the ability to earn money with cryptocurrency by completing tasks, and unrestricted dapp browsers.” In December, Coinbase warned its customers it might have to remove its dApp …
In a major new partnership, Samsung has announced that the Samsung Blockchain Wallet will be integrated with Gemini, a New York-based crypto exchange. This integration will allow owners of newer Samsung Galaxy phones to not only use their devices as cold storage wallets but to buy and sell crypto via the Gemini exchange as well. Samsung is the global leader in the smartphone market, with 298.1 million units shipped and a 21.8% market share in 2019, according to tech analytic firm Canalys. Adding support for Gemini will lower the barrier to entry to cryptocurrency use for millions of people. Previously, …
