‘Evolved Apes’ NFT creator allegedly absconds with $2.7 million
Investors in Evolved Apes, a recently launched PFP — short for profile picture — nonfungible token (NFT) project, are grappling with the disappearance of the project’s anonymous developer. Going by the moniker “Evil Ape,” the developer has allegedly lived up to the name by vanishing with 798 Ether (ETH) worth over $2.7 million from the project’s coffers. The reportedly stolen funds covered both the money realized from the initial minting process and the ETH traded in the secondary sale of the NFTs on the OpenSea marketplace. Indeed, “Evolved Apes” had been one of the hyped NFT mints recently, with the …

Building a better stock market: Tokenized shares bridge trading gap on blockchain
The dramatic short squeeze of the stock of video game retailer GameStop this January was the moment when r/WallStreetBets finally transformed from a humble Reddit forum into a financial force that can no longer be ignored. But lost among the memes, trading app drama and hand-wringing over the sanctity of the stock market was one surprising outcome: GameStop’s share price didn’t just rise — the company actually listened to its many new retail investors and aggressively ramped up its strategy to focus on e-commerce. Rather than just a one-off market glitch, the investments made by r/WallStreetBets users resulted in the …

Here’s why Algorand's price just rallied to a new multi-year high

Cryptocurrency can actually make a difference by helping people
Between Bitcoin (BTC) breaking the $50,000 hurdle and the upswell in the altcoin markets, crypto has never been more appealing to speculators. But, stacking profits through trading is worthless unless that money is spent. Luckily, charitable organizations are waking up to the possibility of crypto donations as the world embraces crypto. For blockchain entrepreneur Wendy O, when a local gym was in jeopardy, she knew to tap into crypto Twitter for help. Using social media, her YouTube channel and Tik-Tok, the influencer sent out the call to save a business dear to her heart. The Self Care Lab is a …

Crypto social governance will lead to online freedom
The saying, “Everything in moderation, including moderation,” has taken on new meaning since Facebook outsourced responsibility for content moderation to its Oversight Board following the violent events that occurred at the United States Capitol back on Jan. 6, 2021. First conceived in November 2018 as Facebook’s “Supreme Court” for public appeals, the social media giant’s Oversight Board was officially enacted on Oct. 22, 2020. In its time since, the Oversight Board has overturned many of Facebook’s own decisions on what is and is not free speech. Some of the board’s rulings include overturning decisions meant to limit hate speech and …

Elon Musk and Bitcoin: A toxic relationship
On July 8, Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert hosted an Elon Musk-inspired show in Austin, Texas. Aptly named “F*ck Elon,” the event, which included a large number of Bitcoin (BTC) maximalists, was surely a rowdy affair. Keiser is known for many things, but restraint is not necessarily one of them. Although we can debate the merits of such a provocatively titled party, Musk’s divisiveness is certainly not up for debate. Earlier this year, the Bitcoin community — including the maximalists — were vocal supporters of Musk. He saw value in Bitcoin and Bitcoin saw value in Musk, one of the …

Social media platform plans to become crypto’s ‘go-to’ network
A new initial exchange offering (IEO) token launch platform achieved liftoff last week, starting with a crypto-industry focused social media platform as its first project. Created by the three-year-old, zero-fee cryptocurrency exchange Digitex, Blockfunder’s first IEO project is Blockster, a fully featured social media platform targeting a very specific community: Crypto enthusiasts and blockchain “hustlers.” Blockster — the name being a mash-up of blockchain and hustler — claims to be “a groundbreaking social network built just for crypto” that it believes can become “the kind of home base the crypto community is missing.” The premise is fairly simple: Start by …

Bitcoin price slumps $2K on Musk’s ‘in the end’ tweets
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has brought more stress to the cryptocurrency markets by posting another series of cryptocurrency-related tweets on Thursday. The Bitcoin price reacted immediately, dropping from around $38,700 to $37,500 in an hour. Bitcoin continued falling as Musk kept tweeting more cryptic posts in the thread including another breakup-themed tweet on falling crypto prices as well as a post on Dogecoin (DOGE). pic.twitter.com/MLhu6oOwgc — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 4, 2021 Bitcoin subsequently dipped to as low as $36,400, …

r/Wallstreetbets rebans crypto discussions following Bloomberg article
r/Wallstreetbets, a subreddit famous for organizing a pump for Dogecoin and the GameStop short squeeze, is enacting a crypto discussion ban after officially allowing the topic for a single day. Subreddit moderator u/bawse1 announced on Thursday that r/Wallstreetbets has now banned crypto discussions forever, following a Bloomberg article titled “WallStreetBets Bows to Crypto.” Just a day before, the same moderator officially announced that the subreddit will finally allow crypto discussion strictly limited to Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and Dogecoin (DOGE). The new post reads: “Due to the article that was written [by] Bloomberg who somehow felt that ‘WallStreetBets Bows to …

CEO of biggest crypto exchange has ‘close to 100%’ of net worth in crypto
Changpeng Zhao, founder and CEO of the largest global cryptocurrency exchange Binance and one of the world’s top crypto billionaires, does not own much except crypto. “I’m one of those guys who value liquidity much more than owning something. I actually prefer not to own anything,” Zhao said in a Bloomberg interview on Wednesday. He noted that various cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) now make up nearly 100% of his entire net worth as he does not own any real estate or much fiat holdings. When asked how much of his net worth is invested in crypto, Zhao said: “I would …

Ethereum Improvement Proposal 1559: Is the squeeze worth the juice?
Ethereum Improvement Proposal 1559, set to be bundled together with the “London” upgrade in July, has caused as much excitement as fear and panic. On the surface, EIP-1559 is nothing more than a change in Ethereum’s gas fee structure. And to spice it up, it has also been labeled as Ethereum’s scarcity engine, or burn mechanism, as it will destroy Ether (ETH) used in transaction fees, making the cryptocurrency deflationary, and perhaps more valuable down the line. Related: Ethereum at a crossroads: Ether community turmoil over miner reward fees Curbing Ether’s inflation will make the digital asset as deflationary as …
