Bitcoin capitulations abound — Data shows realized and unrealized losses at record-highs
Being three weeks removed from the FTX collapse, Bitcoin (BTC) analysts are combing through data to decipher whether more selling will continue or if a bear market floor has been reached. One thing miners, short-term and long-term holders have in common is they are losing in the Bitcoin market right now. According to on-chain analysis from Glassnode, the scale of both realized and unrealized losses amongst Bitcoin holders is one of the heaviest capitulation events in BTC’s history. Capitulation is hindering all groups from the increasing number of bankruptcies and dwindling miner revenue. Bitcoin’s realized losses fourth largest on record …

New BTC miner capitulation? 5 things to know in Bitcoin this week
Bitcoin (BTC) prepares to exit a grim November just above $16,000 — what could be on the menu for BTC price this week? In a time of what analyst Willy Woo has called “unprecedented deleveraging,” Bitcoin is far from out of the woods after losing over 20% this month. The impact of the FTX implosion remains unknown, and warning signs continue to flow in even after the first wave of crypto business bankruptcies. In particular this week, eyes are on miners, who are seeing profits squeezed by falling spot price and surging hash rate. Upheaval is in the air, and …

Bitcoin mining revenue lowest in two years, hash rate on the decline
The revenue earned by Bitcoin (BTC) miners fell to two-year lows owing to poor market performance and a heavier computational demand amid rising network difficulty. However, an ongoing downturn in the Bitcoin hash rate over the past month has allowed miners to recoup losses. The total Bitcoin mining revenue — block rewards and transaction fees — in U.S. dollars fell down to $11.67 million, a number last seen on Nov. 2, 2020, when Bitcoin’s trading price was around $13,500. While the current market price of around $16,500 suggests an obvious increase in mining revenue, factors including greater mining difficulty and …

Bitcoin miners look to software to help balance the Texas grid
Although Bitcoin (BTC) mining remains a controversial topic, it’s becoming more common to hear how Bitcoin mining can help balance grid demand. This is being demonstrated in the state of Texas, as Bitcoin miners are able to participate in demand response programs, which incentivize miners to turn off their operations during peak demand. A spokesperson from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) — the organization that operates Texas’s electrical grid — told Cointelegraph that crypto loads can have impacts on the grid just like any large load. Yet, they noted that crypto miners can help stabilize the grid by …

New York governor signs PoW mining moratorium into law
New York governor Kathy Hochul signed the proof-of-work (PoW) mining moratorium into law on Nov. 22, making it the first state in America to ban any PoW crypto mining activity for two years. The PoW mining moratorium will not only prohibit new mining operations but also refuse the renewal of licenses to those who are already operating in the state. Any new PoW mining operation in the state could only operate if it uses 100% renewable energy. The PoW mining bill was first passed by the state assembly in April earlier this year and later got the nod of the …

Iris Energy to cut mining hardware after defaulting on $108M loan
Australian Bitcoin mining firm Iris Energy is the latest to suffer from the squeeze of the crypto bear market, losing a significant chunk of its mining power after defaulting on a loan. A filing by the firm to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Nov. 21 revealed that it has unplugged its hardware used as collateral in a $107.8 million loan as of Nov. 18. The operation generates around $2 million in Bitcoin gross profit per month but cannot cover the $7 million …

Could Hong Kong really become China’s proxy in crypto?
With its partial autonomy, the island city of Hong Kong has traditionally served as “a gate to China” — the local trade center, backed by transparent English-style common law and an openly pro-business government strategy. Could the harbor, home to seven million inhabitants, inherit this role in relation to the crypto industry, becoming a proxy for mainland China’s experiments with crypto? An impulse to such questioning was given by Arthur Hayes, the former CEO of crypto derivatives giant BitMEX in his Oct. 26 blog post. Hayes believes the Hong Kong government’s announcement about introducing a bill to regulate crypto to …

Bitcoin miners send less BTC to exchanges since 2020 halving despite FTX
Bitcoin (BTC) miners may be sending more BTC to exchanges this month — but overall, their sales have crashed since 2020. Data from on-chain analytics platform CryptoQuant confirms that daily miner transfers to exchanges have decreased by two thirds or more. Miners cool BTC exchange sales after FTX spike After BTC/USD lost 25% in days last week, existing concerns over miner solvency have heightened. Given their cost basis and rising hash rate, commentators warned that many mining participants may not be able to make ends meet — block subsidies and fees would not be enough to cancel out expenses, chiefly …
