Too ‘grande’ to fail — Bitcoin price stumbles at $44K as China plans for Evergrande’s implosion

Published at: Sept. 23, 2021

Bitcoin (BTC) faced stiff resistance above $44,000 on Thursday, Sept. 23, as China told governments to prepare for property giant Evergrande to collapse.

Buyers line up to snag sub-$40,000 BTC

Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView showed volatility continuing for BTC/USD Thursday.

The pair had seen a solid recovery overnight, this fading at what was previous support just above $44,000.

At the time of writing, the pair traded at around $43,700, dipping as news hit that China was briefing governmental structures on Evergrande’s financial fallout.

Signals remain mixed over the troubled firm, shares of which jumped amid signs of an exit from what chairman Hui Ka Yuan called its “darkest moment.”

For Bitcoin traders, however, it was business as usual and little cause for concern.

“Bitcoin correcting a little, as we’ve approached the resistance,” Cointelegraph contributor Michaël van de Poppe summarized.

“Looking at $42K as a potential support zone for a higher low to be created.”

Fellow trader Pentoshi harked back to previous bull market years, which likewise saw multiple deeper corrections from local highs on the way to a larger cycle top.

Can't have peaks w/o valleysIn 2017 there were 5 corrections lasted between 13-34 days greater than 20%This year we have had 5 corrections of greater than 20% and $BTC is still currently 42.5k The volatility is all opportunity at the end of the day

Data from monitoring resource Material Indicators, meanwhile, showed a considerable buy wall building up below $40,000.

Altcoins keep the faith on next “impulse moves”

Bitcoin’s 24-hour gains provided a boost for flagging altcoins that had suffered during the previous retests of $40,000 support.

The top 10 cryptocurrencies were led by Solana (SOL) on the day, up 12%, while the largest altcoin, Ether (ETH), was up 5.3% above $3,000.

“I think Ether against Bitcoin is likely bottomed out at this stage,” van de Poppe said in a YouTube update.

He added that altcoins more broadly were still apt to see “new impulse waves” as Bitcoin’s slow return to form failed to dampen strength.

Bitcoin and altcoins took a hit, but derivatives data reflects a calmer market
Looking at the winners and losers of the past week clearly shows that traders endured some serious heat as the total crypto market capitalization dropped by 12.7% when Bitcoin fell to $41,000. This sharp downside move knocked the figure from $2.37 trillion to $1.92 trillion on Dec. 3 and a total of $2 billion long future contracts were liquidated. Bitcoin (BTC) price retraced 14.6% over the past week, effectively underperforming the broader altcoin market. Part of this unusual movement can be explained by the performance seen in decentralized applications which held up better than most of the market. Data shows …

Crypto markets bounced and sentiment improved, but retail has yet to FOMO
An ascending triangle formation has driven the total crypto market capitalization toward the $1.2 trillion level. The issue with this 7-week-long setup is the diminishing volatility, which could last until late August. From there, the pattern can break either way, but Tether and futures markets data show bulls lacking enough conviction to catalyze an upside break. Investors cautiously await further macroeconomic data on the state of the economy as the United States Federal Reserve (FED) raises interest rates and places its asset purchase program on hold. Data shows Bitcoin and altcoins at risk of a 20% drop to new yearly lows
After the rising wedge formation was broken on Aug. 17, the total crypto market capitalization quickly dropped to $1 trillion and the bulls' dream of recouping the $1.2 trillion support, last seen on June 10, became even more distant. The worsening conditions are not exclusive to crypto markets. The price of WTI oil ceded 3.6% on Aug. 22, down 28% from the $122 peak seen on June 8. The United States treasuries 5-year yield, which bottomed on Aug. 1 at 2.61%, reverted the trend and is now trading at 3.16%. These are all signs that investors are feeling less confident …

The total crypto market cap continues to crumble as the dollar index hits a 20 year high
From a bearish perspective, there's a fair probability that the crypto market entered a descending channel (or wedge) on Aug. 15 after it failed to break above the $1.2 trillion total market capitalization resistance. Even if the pattern isn't yet clearly distinguishable, the last couple of weeks have not been positive. For example, the $940 billion total market cap seen on Aug. 29 was the lowest in 43 days. The worsening conditions have been accompanied by a steep correction in traditional markets, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index has declined by 12% since Aug. 15 and even WTI oil prices …
