CME’s Ether futures drove more than $30M volume on first day

Published at: Feb. 10, 2021

The launch of Chicago Mercantile Group’s highly anticipated Ether futures saw more than $30 million worth of contracts traded during the first day of trade.

Launched on Feb. 8, CME’s new Ether product saw 388 contracts traded in its first day, with 303 of the contracts being mobilized to speculate on February’s price. While 84 contracts expiring in March were also traded, only a single April contract changed hands.

Each of CME’s contracts represents 50 Ether, with the exchange setting the minimum trade value at five contracts — worth more than $450,000 at current prices.

CME’s ETH futures last traded for $1,826.5, a 1.5% price premium over the spot markets. With the majority of contracts traded set to expire in February, traders appear to be speculating that Ether will close the month near its current price levels.

The days leading up to the launch saw significant bullish momentum for Ethereum, with price rallying into new all-time highs above $1,500 and social engagement at unprecedented levels

With Ether’s on-chain activity and transaction fees surging, Mythos Capital founder Ryan Adams declared that “another flippening” has transpired, pointing to CoinMetrics data indicating that Ethereum has now surpassed Bitcoin by the value of on-chain settlement using its native coin.

Another flippening.Ethereum is now settling more value in ETH than Bitcoin is settling in BTC. Ethereum is now the largest network for trustless money settlement. They say reserve currency status is the last to fall when an economic power gets outcompeted.1 flippening left. pic.twitter.com/W0Wq65Da25

According to Blockchain Center’s “Flippening Index,” which seeks to measure Ethereum’s strength relative to Bitcoin by eight key metrics, Ethereum has already overtaken Bitcoin by half of its indicators — transaction count, node count, transaction volume, and total transaction fees.

The index ranked Ethereum’s Google search interest and market cap at roughly one-quarter of Bitcoin’s, while Ether active addresses are at 53% and trade volume is at 74%. All told the Flippening Index is currently sitting at an all-time high of 72.4%.

Crypto derivatives data signals improving investor sentiment and a possible trend reversal
This week the total crypto market capitalization rallied 10% to $1.68 trillion, which is a 25% recovery from the Jan. 24 bottom. It's too early to suggest that the market has found a bottom but two key indicators — The Tether/CNY premium and CME futures basis — have recently flipped bullish, signaling that positive investor sentiment is backing the current price recovery. Traders should not assume that the bear trend has ended by merely looking at price charts. For example, between Dec. 13 and Dec. 27, the sector's total market capitalization bounced from a $1.9 trillion low to $2.33 trillion. …

Here's why pro traders expect further downside from Ethereum price
Derivatives data shows that Ether (ETH) traders are feeling less bullish when compared to Bitcoin (BTC). Even though the altcoin captured a nearly 200% gain in the first half of 2021 versus Bitcoin's modest 22% price increase, traders seem to be more affected by Ether's recent underperformance. Institutional flow also backs the decreased optimism seen in Ether derivatives, as ETH investment vehicles suffered record outflows this past week while Bitcoin flows began to stabilize. According to data from CoinShares, Ether funds experienced a record outflow of $50 million this past week. Take notice of how Ether is underperforming Bitcoin by …

The price of Ether (ETH) is surging past $2,000 with strong momentum while gaining a bit of ground on Bitcoin (BTC) in the last 24 hours. There are three key reasons behind the explosive rally of Ether, namely the rapid growth of DeFi, the hype around ETH after the CME futures listing, and the decreasing amount of BTC and ETH on exchanges. CME futures listing institutional hype Ether hitting $2,000 for the first time ever follows the launch of CME ETH futures earlier this month, which primarily target institutional investors. Ethereum on-chain data hints at further downside for ETH price
Analyzing Ether's (ETH) current price chart paints a bearish picture, which is largely justified by the 11% drop over the past month, but other traditional finance assets faced more extreme price corrections in the same period. The Invesco China Technology ETF (CQQ) is down 31% and the Russell 2000 declined by 8%. Currently, traders fear that losing the descending channel support at $2,850 could lead to a stronger price downturn, but this largely depends on how derivatives traders are positioned along with the Ethereum network's on-chain metrics. According to Defi Llama, the Ethereum network's total value locked (TVL) flattened in …
