Fed never did it: US Senate Banking head lashes out at Super Bowl crypto ads

Published at: Feb. 16, 2022

The Super Bowl advertisements by crypto companies including Coinbase, FTX, and several others ruled the social media and news headlines for their out-of-the-box approach. However, The United States Senate Banking Committee chief Sherrod Brown was not impressed and blasted the ad-makers for not including appropriate warnings and risks involved.

Brown, during the Tuesday Senate hearing on stablecoins, brought in the topic of popular crypto advertisements that aired during the Super Bowl. He said most of these ads failed to tell people about the downsides of investing in cryptocurrencies. The companies failed to mention the wild price swings and prevalent scams that occur in the market or the fact that the crypto market is not as well regulated as the traditional ones.

Super Bowl advertisement slots are one of the most popular as well as most expensive ones where companies such as Coinbase and FTX paid nearly $20 million for a 30-sec ad slot.

Brown lashed out at the crypto companies claiming they are just trying to make big profits and reaching out to as many Americans as they can. He also said that if crypto is the money as many of these companies claim, why do they need to spurge millions to promote it. He said:

“The fact that these companies felt the need to advertise at all is a bit of a giveaway about one of their major claims – if this were actually meant to be used as currency, why would you need to buy ads? I’ve never seen the Federal Reserve buy a multimillion-dollar commercial for U.S. dollars.”

The crypto community on Twitter was not very pleased with the senate banking head’s take on crypto ads as one user wrote:

"As if 'fiat' currencies have never had issues with transparency, use illegality, being untraceable, used worldwide in criminal ways, and the like. Fear-uncertainty-doubt rules the day for some."

Another user recommended a more detailed education on cryptocurrencies:

“Sounds like Sen. Sherrod Brown needs a crypto education. BrianBrooksUS, time to make another house call.”

The Tuesday Senate hearing saw Brown also advocate against Stablecoin claiming it endangers the economy and hard-earned money of Americans. However, New Jersey Representative Josh Gottheimer introduced a new legislature for governed insured stablecoins quite similar to fiat deposits.

Fed Governor Waller praises stablecoins as a genuine innovation that makes the development of CBDCs redundant
In a speech published Wednesday noon, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher J. Waller reiterated his skepticism for implementing a central bank digital currency, or CBDC, in the United States. However, Waller is not an ordinary cryptocurrency skeptic, as he cites the development of genuine private-sector payment innovations, specifically stablecoins, as the reason why CBDCs are not needed. Top Stablecoins by Market Capitalization | Source: Treasury Report on Stablecoins (Nov. 2021) Despite the positive outlook, Waller highlighted three risks surrounding stablecoins. The first of which he noted as a potential destabilizing run, where unregulated or unscrupulous issuers provide financial instruments that go …

Fitting the bill: US Congress eyes e-cash as an alternative to CBDC
On March 11, United States President Joe Biden issued an executive order in which he encouraged the Federal Reserve to continue research on a prospective U.S. central bank digital currency, or CBDC. The order emphasized that the market capitalization of digital assets had surpassed $3 trillion in November — with Bitcoin (BTC) representing more than half of the total value of all cryptocurrency and peaking at over $60,000 — up from just $14 billion five years prior. For comparison’s sake, the U.S. money supply (M1) in the same month was $20.345 trillion. Stephen Lynch, a member of Congress who chairs …

US lagging on CBDCs could spell ‘trouble’ — Crypto Council policy head
A cryptocurrency researcher and former CIA analyst believes the United States government’s relatively slow start on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) development may result in it losing grip on controlling the global financial system. Yaya Fanusie, the policy head at the crypto advocacy group the Crypto Council for Innovation explained in a Feb. 28 Bloomberg interview that sanctioned states are looking to transact on financial infrastructure that isn’t controlled or heavily influenced by the U.S. in order to move funds more freely cross-borders. If the U.S. continues to sit on the “sidelines” and lag behind on CBDC adoption, Fanusie believes …

Fear of the unknown: A tale of the SEC’s crusade against synthetics
On the opening day of Messari Mainnet 2021, New York City’s long-awaited first crypto conference since the start of COVID-19, reports came blazing in via a viral tweet that the United States Securities and Exchange Commission had served a subpoena to an event panelist at the top of an escalator in broad daylight. While it’s still not entirely clear who was served (or why), this isn’t the first time the SEC has encroached upon the crypto industry in full view of the public. Let’s go back a mere two months. Is there a way for the crypto sector to avoid Bitcoin’s halving-related bear markets?
There is good reason to be afraid. Previous down markets have seen declines in excess of 80%. While tightfisted hodling might hold wisdom among many Bitcoin (BTC) maximalists, speculators in altcoins know that diamond handing can mean near (or total) annihilation. Regardless of one’s investment philosophy, in risk-off environments, participation flees the space with haste. The purest among us might see a silver lining as the devastation clears the forest floor of weeds, leaving room for the strongest projects to flourish. Though, doubtlessly, there are many saplings lost who would grow to great heights themselves if they had a chance. …
