Uniswap has now generated more than $1B in fees for liquidity providers

Published at: Aug. 12, 2021

Leading decentralized exchange Uniswap has become the first decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol to generate more than $1 billion worth of platform fees for liquidity providers.

On Tuesday, Lucas Outumuro, head of research at crypto data aggregator IntoTheBlock, shared a chart on Twitter showing that the combined fee revenues of Uniswap’s v2 and v3 Ethereum mainnet deployments have surpassed $1 billion.

Including the fees generated by both Uniswap v1 and its v3 deployment on Optimism, Outumuro noted that roughly $1.02 billion has been distributed to Uniswap liquidity providers since the protocol’s creation in November 2018.

By contrast, IntoTheBlock’s data shows that the Bitcoin network has generated $2.24 billion in fees since its 2009 launch, while the DeFi-driven surge in activity on Ethereum has raised its total fee revenue to $4.74 billion in six years.

However, surging Ethereum-powered game Axie Infinity has emerged as the leading decentralized application (DApp) by fee revenue in recent weeks. According to Token Terminal, Axie has driven $308.5 million in platform fees over the past 30 days, equating to a daily average of nearly $10.3 million.

According to data from Dune Analytics, popular nonfungible token (NFT) marketplace OpenSea also appears to have overtaken Uniswap by fee revenue recently, with the platform generating $4.2 million in fees daily. According to CryptoFees, Uniswap represents $3.9 million in daily platform fees.

With Ethereum’s recent London upgrades introducing a burn mechanism into the network’s fee market on Aug. 5, the surging popularity of Ethereum-based DApps has resulted in $100 million worth of Ether (ETH) being burned and more than 1,000 deflationary blocks being mined over the past week.

According to Ultrasound.Money, OpenSea currently ranks as the leading Ethereum DApp by burn rate after destroying 3,918 Ether (worth $12.5 million) since London went live.

Uniswap v2 ranks second with 2,344 Ether ($7.5 million), followed by Axie Infinity with 1,805 Ether (nearly $5.8 million), and Tether (USDT) with 1,555 Ether ($5 million).

1inch announces deployment to Optimism's layer-2 solution
Decentralized exchange aggregator 1inch has announced its deployment on the Optimistic Ethereum (OE) mainnet, highlighting a considerable reduction in user transaction fees and confirmation delays. Sergej Kunz, co-founder of the 1inch Network, stated that "The 1inch launch on Optimistic will facilitate a dramatic increase in transaction speed." While deposits utilizing the OE network are set to be credited almost instantly, withdrawals will require a waiting period of seven days. These wait times are expected to improve when fast withdrawal service is enabled sometime in the future. At the time of launch, the OE network will only be able to handle …

Project to provide easy-to-use multichain wallet and Ethereum-to-Polkadot bridge
A smart contract platform aimed at the decentralized finance market seeks to make it easy to transfer decentralized applications from clogged, expensive Ethereum to Polkadot. The open-source project’s goal is to create easy-to-use blockchain infrastructure that will improve the interoperability of cross-chain assets, attracting developers of DeFi projects. Clover Finance wants to build a one-stop infrastructure platform that will make it simpler and less expensive for developers of DeFi projects to migrate their DApps onto Polkadot, a potential Ethereum killer that achieves scalability by running many blockchains in parallel, each with its own design and each serving a specific purpose …

‘DeFi done right’: Layer-one protocol launches mainnet
A decentralized finance protocol has launched its mainnet — describing it as a crucial step on the journey to a frictionless financial future. Radix, which describes itself as a platform for smart money, is also launching Instapass with its Olympia mainnet — an optional user and developer service that delivers the world’s first single sign-on solution for building compliant DeFi. The Radix mainnet is being positioned as a generational improvement in the history of decentralized ledger computing — and one that delivers 100 times more executional efficiency than the Ethereum Virtual Machine. This comes hot on the heels of the …

Ethereum Scaling and Gas-Free Transactions Arrive
Ethereum 2.0 is expected to launch within months, but new scaling solutions and gas-free transactions are already here. The network is also growing more popular, with the number of active wallets more than doubling since January to around half a million. Synthetix scales up optimistically The developers behind the second-largest DeFi protocol, Synthetix, have partnered with Ethereum layer-2 research team Optimism to launch a demo deployment of Synthetix Exchange on the Optimistic Virtual Machine (OVM). Optimism’s OVM is a layer-2 scaling solution designed to allow DeFi financial platforms to operate with comparable speeds to centralized systems. The use of scaling …

Gas-free transactions will revolutionize Web3
Scalability is one of the main hindrances within decentralized finance (DeFi) applications and has created huge barriers to entry. Closely linked to this has been the issue of high gas fees, which continues to be a major pain point for newcomers to the Web3 space. When Web3 goes mainstream, these gas costs will become minimal. For the user, the experience will become completely gas-less like how it is on Web 2.0 applications. As a result of the lack of scalability and network congestion, gas fees have skyrocketed, further preventing users from performing various transactions on the blockchain. According to YCharts …
