SushiSwap is eating into Uniswap’s market share following Yearn merger

Published at: Jan. 29, 2021

Following its merger into the Yearn ecosystem, SushiSwap has been making significant inroads into the market share of leading decentralized exchange Uniswap.

On Jan. 29, Messari researcher Mira Christanto tweeted data illustrating that Uniswap’s share of the Automated Market Maker sector has declined as Sushi’s share expanded from mid-December until last week.

Christanto asserts the Yearn merger has given Sushi a newfound legitimacy, allowing the project to move past criticism of the project that launched in August as a clone of Uniswap and secured TVL early on via a so-called “vampire” liquidity attack.

In November, Sushi attracted further liquidity away from Uniswap by introducing yield farming rewards for pairings that had been previously incentivized by the leading DEX.

Christanto states Sushiswap “has put their past behind,” with the platform now consistently driving between $2 billion and $2.5 billion in liquidity and weekly volume. The analyst noted that Sushi has no venture capital backing, is community-driven, and “innovates quickly,” concluding:

"SushiSwap is evolving from being an exchange to include lending, franchised liquidity pools, cross-chain integrations and a launchpad. Under #Yearn 's ecosystem, it'll benefit from new network effects.”

Despite SushiSwap’s apparent success in attracting liquidity providers from its main rival, Uniswap remains very popular and the DEX accountsg for more than 60% of all unique addresses that have ever interacted with DeFi.

While Sushi’s $2.07 billion TVL equates to nearly two-thirds of Uniswap’s $3.18 billion, Sushi’s total cumulative user base is equal to only 8% of Uniswap’s. However, Uniswap’s first iteration launched in November 2018, meaning the platform had accrued a total user base of 225,000 before Sushi’s launch.

All you can eat: SushiSwap deploys contracts on five new networks
Major DeFi protocols are moving to cultivate a multi-chain decentralized finance ecosystem, with SushiSwap deploying its contracts on five networks, and Balancer announcing ports onto Moonbeam and Polkadot. On March 3, SushiSwap CTO, Joseph Delong, announced the DEX had deployed contracts on xDai, Moonbeam Network, Binance Smart Chain, Polygon (previously called Matic), and Fantom. Delong noted Sushi is planning additional future deployments, including on Optimism. A Solana port is also under consideration. While the CTO stated users can expect “relatively complete” experiences on Fantom and Binance as both networks currently “have good support for token lists,” the three other networks …

Will the launch of Uniswap v3 spark a new DeFi boom?
With the total value locked in decentralized finance on Ethereum now $89 billion, the market is eagerly waiting to see if the launch of Uniswap v3 could be the catalyst for DeFi’s next big bull run. Uniswap v3 promises advanced new features and opportunities for yield generation with its launch scheduled for Wednesday. Uniswap is emphasizing three new features for liquidity providers — customizable capital deployment across a market’s entire price curve in the form of concentrated liquidity, tiered market maker fees offering boosted returns for volatile pairs subject to impermanent loss, and cheaper access to oracles for improved data …

Here are 6 DEX tokens that have seen exponential growth in 2021
DeFi has steadily grown in prominence over the past year thanks in large part to the strong foundations established by decentralized exchanges (DEX) that enable easy access to the latest tokens and projects. While there have been previous iterations of DEX user interfaces, such as IDEX or Etherdelta, it wasn’t until Uniswap launched that trading in the DeFi network really took off and facilitated the launch of the finance tokens. Here are six of the top-performing tokens in the decentralized finance sector. UNI/USDT Uniswap has risen from the humble beginnings of a simple user interface that allowed for a token …

Exchange tokens benefit as centralized exchanges battle with DeFi platforms
Fresh institutional and retail investor inflows into the cryptocurrency market have led to bull market conditions for many top tokens from blue-chips like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) to more recently established DeFi projects like AAVE and Synthetix (SNX). Exchange tokens are another easily overlooked sub-sector of the market but they have been performing exceptionally well in 2021 as increases in trading volumes results in a larger pool of fees to collect when the exchange’s native token is used for settlement. Native exchange tokens are also typically used as the base pair for funding new listings and token buybacks. Here …

Uniswap tops $50B in lifetime volume, but where’s it coming from?
Leading decentralized exchange Uniswap has surpassed $50 billion in all-time trade volume, a major milestone for the DEX sector. On Dec. 15, Uniswap creator Hayden Adams tweeted data indicating the platform has processed a life-time volume of $51.7 billion across 26,000 unique trading pairs — equating to nearly $2 million per pairing on average.
