Speed, scaling, regulation to play key role for crypto in 2022: FTX CEO

Published at: Dec. 28, 2021

FTX founder and CEO Sam Bankman-Fried rounded off 2021 on an optimistic note. SBF waxed lyrical about the crypto market’s state in 2021 while revealing the roadmap for FTX in 2022 in a Twitter flood.

In his view, there are three keystones to industry progress in 2022: regulation, scaling, and transaction speeds. He proposes solutions to each puzzle piece, referencing his exchange's involvement.

On regulation, SBF states stablecoins could be better reported and audited. In line with FTX stablecoin policies, he says more transparency would solve “80% of the problems while allowing stablecoins to thrive onshore.” Meanwhile, better markets oversight and an anti-fraud-based regime for token issuances could address other regulatory gaps.

Secondly, while crypto users number somewhere in 200 million, “punching way above their weight,” more blockchain network effects are needed to achieve wider mainstream adoption.

Fortunately, FTX is leading the charge. They doubled their user count in quarter 4, cementing themselves as one of the top exchanges in crypto at a $25 billion valuation. SBF explains that while smart contracts have paved the way for Metaverse, decentralized finance (DeFi) and Web3 developments, video games could be the path to massive scaling:

“Tapping into the existing userbase of video games could be huge–billions of users and hundreds of billions of dollars each year.”

However, he goes on to say, “this only makes sense if it makes the virtual worlds more engaging, not less.” Blockchain integrations in games, such as NFTs, only work i they improve an already great game or virtual experience.

Finally, cryptocurrency transactions must change gears. Levels of 50,000 transactions per second are not enough to satisfy industrial-scale applications. Without high speeds, the other two issues cannot execute well. He jokes:

“I always laugh when a blockchain says they're already fast. None are! (...) Fast means millions of TPS. No one is there yet.”

As the wealthiest person in crypto according to Forbes, SBF’s net worth of $26.5 billion puts the 29-year-old just outside of the world’s top 100 people. He’s no stranger to the limelight and a highly regarded figure, sharing Twitter spaces with Tom Brady and reaching Cointelegraph’s third most notable person in blockchain in 2021.

Antigua's Crypto Regulation Bill Passes Lower Parliament
Antigua and Barbuda’s House of Representatives passed a cryptocurrency regulation bill on May 27. With this bill, they have taken steps towards becoming digital asset-friendly destinations in the Caribbean. The regulatory framework, called “The Digital Assets Business Bill 2020”, aims to regulate crypto companies that establish their operations on the island and provide protection for both exchanges and their customers. Among the critical inputs of the bill is the rule that all digital asset businesses in Antigua and Barbuda must obtain a license for “issuing, selling, or redeeming virtual coins,” operating as a payment service or electronic exchange, providing custodial …

Is there a future for digital fashion in the Metaverse?
ourtesy of Kat Taylor Cattytay, digital fashion appeared in 2017. However, we began to talk loudly about it only in 2020. It all began five years ago when Kat first made an Instagram post with the caption “Virtual Clothing!!!” Then, there was a collaboration with Adidas, Off-White, Vetements and Balenciaga. These brands were interested in introducing fashion digitalization even before it blew up in the mass media discourse. Note that the COVID-19 pandemic had yet to happen and people were not stuck at home. Thus, there was no need for digital clothing at all. Nevertheless, it happened and fashion digitalization …

Brain drain: India’s crypto tax forces budding crypto projects to move
India’s 30% crypto tax came into law on March 31 and was effective April 1, despite warnings from several stakeholders about its possible ill impact on the budding crypto industry. As predicted, within just a couple of weeks of the new crypto tax law coming into effect, trading volume across major crypto exchanges dropped as much as 90%. The decline in trading activity was attributed to traders either moving their funds away from centralized crypto exchanges or adopting a holding strategy over trading. Many crypto exchanges were hoping that a crypto tax would at least offer some form of recognition …

Demystifying the business imperatives of the Metaverse
In a previous article, I discussed the evolution of Web3 economies and current volatility, focusing on the participatory nature of Web3, which is the foundational technology enabling the creator economy. The term “metaverse” — meta and universe — often describes the anticipated future iteration or evolution of the internet powered by Web3 technologies like blockchain and decentralized resource distribution and consumption principles. Although the focus has often been on metaverse modalities such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), gaming, Second Life, avatars and so forth, in my view, these modalities represent an interesting evolution or shift from the digital …

Are non-KYC crypto exchanges as safe as their KYC-compliant peers?
Many see implementing Know Your Customer (KYC) tools in crypto as a deterrent to the Bitcoin (BTC) Standard, which has predominantly promoted anonymized peer-to-peer transactions. However, regulators stay put on promoting KYC and anti-money laundering (AML) implementations as a means to ensure investors’ safety and protection against financial fraud. While most crypto exchanges have begun implementing regulatory recommendations to remain at the forefront of crypto’s mainstream adoption, investors still have the choice to opt for crypto exchanges that promote greater anonymity by not imposing KYC processes. But does opting for the latter as an investor mean compromising on safety? A …
