DOT flip: Polkadot overtakes XRP to become the fourth largest cryptocurrency

Published at: Jan. 15, 2021

There have been some big movers as the crypto market rally resumes and Polkadot’s DOT token is among them.

According to figures from leading analytics portal Coingecko, DOT has flipped Ripple’s XRP in terms of market capitalization following a massive gain of 26% over the past 24 hours. This makes it the new fourth largest cryptocurrency by market cap.

The Polkadot token has surged from an intraday low of just below $11 to top out at an all-time high of $14.80 before retreating slightly to $14.45 at the time of writing. The big price move has pushed its market cap to $13.7 billion as reported by Coingecko.

XRP, conversely, has only managed a gain of 3.7% over the past 24 hours which has not been enough to take the cross-border transfer token above $0.30. Its market cap is currently just below DOT’s at $13.5 billion.

Stats from Polkadot’s own platform estimate it has an even higher market cap of $14.8 billion using a circulation figure of just over one billion tokens. Messari crypto stats are very similar to this and they also show DOT having flipped XRP with a $3 billion difference in market cap.

The Binance owned Coinmarketcap is the only site in disagreement as it reports the DOT supply as ten percent lower. CMC was late to list Polkadot, which is an Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain competitor.

Polkadot is essentially a multi-chain protocol which has a number of ‘parachains’ (called shards in Ethereum) and works on its own technology called ‘Substrate’, which is a blockchain framework. The platform is fully interoperable, allowing other blockchains to connect to the network as a sidechain and the blockchain protocol has the ability to process thousands of transactions per second, leading it to be dubbed the latest ‘Ethereum killer’.

The most recent update, which may be driving momentum, was the launch of its Rococo parachain testnet which went live in late December. It is now gaining more partners according to the Polkadot community;

Other factors driving momentum include the issues with DeFi on Ethereum as demand for scaling intensifies, along with a strong technical market structure.

XRP purchasers back Ripple, arguing that it is not a security
On Dec. 22, 2020, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission filed a complaint against Ripple Labs. The complaint essentially alleged that Ripple had engaged in a multi-year, sustained practice of illegally selling unregistered, non-exempt securities in the form of its XRP tokens. This complaint, having been filed on the last day of former SEC Chairman Jay Clayton’s tenure at the commission, led to a considerable volume of public commentary, as is not unusual for SEC litigation against major players in the crypto space. What is unusual about SEC versus Ripple is the reaction from a sizable segment of XRP …

When an asset is in an overbought condition and traders are sitting on large profits, even minor negative news and events could trigger profit-booking. This seems to have happened following Janet Yellen’s adverse comments on cryptocurrencies during a virtual hearing with the U.S. Senate Finance Committee. In the same meeting, Yellen also told Congress to “act big” in order to support the U.S. economy. Another round of stimulus would probably further weaken the U.S. dollar and drive investors into assets that are considered as a store of value. This means Yellen's comments may have inadvertently boosted the sentiment surrounding gold …

Strategists at JPMorgan said in a note that MassMutual’s $100 million Bitcoin (BTC) purchase shows that insurance firms and pension funds are now adopting Bitcoin. According to the analysts, typically this class of institutional investors is conservative in their style of investing so the recent allocation is quite significant. However, the strategists said that even if the pension funds and the insurance companies in the U.S., Japan, the U.K., and the Euro area keep 1% of their assets in Bitcoin, that could amount to an additional inflow of about $600 billion into Bitcoin. These investments by institutions may have increased …

Recent news reports suggest that U.S. lawmakers may announce a new round of economic stimulus worth about $908 billion before the end of today. This second package, if announced, will add to the existing debt pile and may send the U.S. dollar index (DXY) lower. The index is already trading near its lowest level since April 2018. The slow economic recovery, expansionary monetary policy, overvalued stocks and negative bond yields are some of the reasons that have forced investors to search for alternative assets to safeguard their portfolios. Gold has been one of the favorite safe-haven assets of investors for …
