DeFi platforms see profits amid FTX collapse and CEX exodus

Published at: Nov. 16, 2022

A week after the fallout from the FTX and Alameda chaos some on-chain data points are interesting to observe. Although record amounts of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) volume are leaving the exchanges, not all decentralized applications (DApps) and protocols have shown growth, mainly due to reliance on FTX and Alameda.

DeFi earnings highlight positive revenue for some protocols

According to Token Terminal’s earnings leaderboard, in the last 7-days, three protocols had revenue above $1 million. Ethereum led the on-chain earnings with over $8.5 million total, a sign of strong post-Merge fundamentals.

OpenSea was a distant second place to Ethereum, earning $1.5 million, while nine protocols and DeFi platforms earned more than $100,000.

Decentralized perpetual exchanges see increased trading volume

Combined with the migration away from centralized exchanges, the volatile crypto market has users trading in record numbers.

According to data from Token Terminal, the daily trading volume of perpetual exchanges reached $5 billion which is the highest daily trading volume since the UST meltdown in May 2022.

While trading volume increased, the total value locked in DeFi lags

Only seven protocols saw a net increase in their total value locked (TVL) over a 7-day period. Gains network, a perpetual exchange on Polygon saw the largest 7-day increase of 17.3%

One inter-chain operability protocol, Ren, witnessed a TVL drop of 50% in the last week. According to Cointelegraph reporting, Ren partnered closely with Alameda, receiving quarterly funding and keeping their treasury directly on FTX. The protocol itself benefited from Alameda’s locked liquidity in an attempt to improve interoperability.

Data also shows that blockchain revenues are rising amid a constant rate of daily active users. Major blockchains saw an increase of over 300% in daily revenue when compared to previous weeks.

At the same time, daily active users remained steady at 1 million. The dichotomy between these data points suggests that transactions are happening at a more frequent pace among existing users.

Blockchain revenues do not necessarily equal earnings

While blockchains saw an increase in revenues which is likely primarily due to token emissions, only Ethereum saw positive earnings. Proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchains like Polygon (MATIC), Binance (BNB) and Optimism all recorded negative earnings. When PoS blockchains have negative earnings, holders of the tokens are hit with inflationary losses.

On-chain data continues to exhibit strong points with increased activity on decentralized perpetual trading platforms and positive revenue for DeFi protocols. Even though CEX outflows were historic, daily active DeFi users did not increase, but the fact that they remained consistent is notable. The same data also highlighted lagging blockchain earnings, (except for Ethereum) and a decrease in TVL.

Bitcoin correction heralded as a ‘BTD’ opportunity, but what about DeFi?
Cryptocurrency investors are still picking up the pieces from the May 19 market-wide implosion which saw Bitcoin (BTC) drop to an unexpected low at $30,000. Post-mortem analysis now shows that the correction catalyzed a mad dash among traders running for the exits as the cascading sell-off resulted in a record 10,525 BTC liquidated across all exchanges. Altcoins were quick to follow suit as they joined Bitcoin in its plunge and hardly a token was left unscathed by the downturn as a wider-sell-off rippled across the market, resulting in a $437 billion haircut to the total market capitalization to $1.672 trillion, …

3 ways the next altcoin bull cycle will vastly differ from 2017’s
A recent report from CoinMetrics suggests that when a new altseason starts it will play out in a way that is vastly different from the market of 2017-2018. According to the authors of the report, the arrival of institutional investors and their interest in Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) has fundamentally shifted the cryptocurrency market landscape. Tokens with real world utility, Layer 2 technology or attractive staking ecosystems will outperform the large cap tokens from pre-2017. Bitcoin and Ethereum dominate but L2 tokens will catch up Institutional inflows firmly established Bitcoin and Ethereum as the chosen Layer 1 (L1) blockchains …

Bitcoin’s sub-$40K range trading and mixed data reflect traders’ uncertainty
The phrase “hindsight is 20/20” is a perfect expression for financial markets because every price chart pattern and analysis is obvious after the movement has occurred. For example, traders playing the Feb. 28 pump that took Bitcoin (BTC) above $43,000 should have known that the price would face some resistance. Considering that the market had previously rejected at $44,500 on multiple instances, calling for a retest below $40,000 made perfect sense right? This is a common fallacy, known as "post hoc," in which one event is said to be the cause of a later event merely because it had occurred …

How crypto tokens (not Bitcoin) will outperform stocks in 2023, Arca’s CIO explains
Digital assets will largely decouple from traditional equity markets in 2023, says Chief Investment Officer at Arca, Jeff Dorman. Discussing his outlook for 2023 in a recent interview with Cointelegraph, Dorman argues that as the global economy enters a recession this year, equities will be negatively affected while some crypto tokens will perform well: the value of the latter, he explained, is determined not only by macroeconomic factors but also by their utility within the respective ecosystems, which would remain unaltered in a recession. “You're going to see a lot of stocks get punished under the weight of restructurings and …
