BitTorrent Adds Binance USD as a Payment Option

Published at: July 9, 2020

BitTorrent, a major file sharing service operating under Tron (TRX) developer, has added Binance’s USD stablecoin, BUSD, as payment option.

As officially announced on July 9, BitTorrent users are now able to buy BitTorrent and µTorrent Classic Pro with BUSD and Binance’s native token, BNB.

With the new addition, BitTorrent now totally features six crypto payment options on its platform. Binance’s BUSD joins the list of already supported cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC), BitTorrent’s utility token BTT, Okex’s OCB, TRX, and BNB.

Alongside the BUSD addition, BitTorrent and µTorrent have also replaced the ERC-20 BNB token with the faster and more liquid BNB (BEP2) as a payment option. BEP2 is expected to improve the experience for BNB users when subscribing to Classic Pro. According to the announcement, the development is a result of Binance and CoinPayments.net collaboration announced in May 2020.

As part of the announcement, BitTorrent is offering 25% off all crypto-based Pro purchases.

BUSD is apparently the first stablecoin featured on BitTorrent for payments. Samuel Lim, chief compliance officer at Binance, outlined that BUSD token is regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). He said:

“We are thrilled to work with BitTorrent to offer BUSD, a NYDFS regulated stablecoin as one of the main payment options for purchasing Classic Pro [...] Holding stable value and built for convenient global transfers, stablecoins like BUSD will become the preferred choice of payments in the near future.”

Cointelegrpah reached out to Binance with additional queries about the development. This article will be updated pending any new information.

Binance Reverses Vote in Apparent Steem Takeover, Steemit Comms Head Resigns
On March 3, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao announced that the exchange had removed its votes that contributed to a sudden shift of control over the Steem blockchain. Earlier today, leading exchanges Binance, Huobi, and Poloniex came under fire for allegedly mobilizing customer deposits to vote in what has been described as a hostile takeover of popular crypto blogging platform Steemit. Steemit’s native blockchain Steem uses a proof-of-stake protocol — where a small number of “witnesses” are voted on to secure its network. Votes are allocated according to the number of tokens that an individual holds in their wallet. Steem’s witnesses …

How the Steem Saga Exposes the Dangers of Staking Pools
Over the last few days, the centralization versus decentralization row has erupted in earnest. In case you missed it, the activities of Tron founder Justin Sun following his takeover of blogging site Steemit have been pivotal to the controversies. Let’s briefly recap. Earlier in February, it emerged that Sun was further expanding his crypto-empire with the acquisition of Steemit, which runs on the Steem blockchain. Steem was developed by Daniel Larimer, who also introduced the delegated proof-of-stake governance model, or dPoS, to the blockchain sphere. Larimer later went on to build EOS, which also runs on dPoS. Related: Steemit Managing …

Coinbase takes a shot at Tether, encourages users to switch to USDC
United States-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has asked its customers to convert their Tether-issued USDT (USDT) stablecoin to USD Coin (USDC), a USD-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle and co-founded by Coinbase in 2018. The cryptocurrency exchange suggested that USDC is a much more secure alternative in the wake of the FTX collapse saga and has also exempted any fee on the conversion of USDT to USDC on its platform. The firm said: “We believe that USD Coin (USDC) is a trusted and reputable stablecoin, so we’re making it more frictionless to switch: starting today, we’re waiving fees for global retail customers …
