Study: Smart Contracts Limit Data Availability, But Improve Its Quality

Published at: Feb. 4, 2020

The latest analysis by research firm Gartner has painted a mixed picture of the benefits that blockchain-based smart contracts can offer enterprises.

While the study, published Jan. 30, concluded that smart contracts would be overall net positive for business, Gartner warned that the terms and conditions set for smart contracts could limit the availability of data for enterprises:

“This variable could leave participants in a worse position than if they did not participate in the blockchain smart contract process. As such, an organization’s overall data asset availability would decrease by 30 percent by 2023.”

Nonetheless, an enterprise can expect to see the quality of its data increase by 50% by 2023 if it adopts blockchain smart contracts, Gartner senior research director Lydia Clougherty Jones said.

Smart contracts are a net positive

Even though the availability of certain data assets might become more limited, Gartner said blockchain smart contract adoption will have profound and beneficial implications for decision making in enterprises. It will also bolster ROI (return on investment) on data and analytics.

Automated, continual verification would ensure that data quality is more reliable and trustworthy, so that decision making can be more transparent, efficient and granular, the study claimed.

Senior research director Clougherty Jones said that their usage would reduce the costs associated with hiring third-party intermediaries — whether they be bankers, escrow agents, and lawyers. In their stead, “code is law” provides a near certainty of trusted exchange:

“Once deployed, blockchain smart contracts are immutable and irrevocable through nonmodifiable code, which enforces a binding commitment to do or not do something in the future.”

The analysts at Gartner advise piloting smart contracts to automate basic business processes, such as non-sensitive data distributions or basic contract information for management purposes.

If successful, these pilots can then be expanded to automate multi-party contracts with external partners within a defined ecosystem, across areas such as banking, finance, real estate, insurance and utilities.

Adoption of the technology at scale is reportedly faster in Asian Pacific countries such as Singapore and Australia, yet business worldwide would do well to take a more proactive stance, the report concludes.

A new smart contract driven privacy network on Ethereum

On Feb. 1, the Aztec privacy network officially launched on the Ethereum blockchain. By way of Zcash-based technology — which hinges on the use of Aztec’s Cryptography Engine smart contract — its goal is to deliver three key privacy cornerstones on the network. The last of these, Aztec CEO Thomas Walton-Pocock told Cointelegraph, “will eventually allow private smart contracts to execute with just one trusted setup.”

Genomics company explores NFTs in hopes of advancing precision medicine
It’s predicted that nonfungible tokens (NFTs) will have a vast impact on society. Given this, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the trillion-dollar healthcare sector has begun to explore NFTs tokens to advance medicine. It’s also important to point out that blockchain technology can play an increasingly important role within the healthcare sector. This was recently highlighted in a report from the European Union Blockchain Observatory, which specifically documents how blockchain applications can solve challenges facing the healthcare industry. For example, the paper notes that patient engagement and transparency of how data is stored, along with the effective distribution …

Blockchain-based platform reinvents omnichain interoperability through validated event data
Systems built on blockchain are enhanced by the security and efficiency afforded by distributed ledger technology. Transactions and events are immutably encrypted into successive blocks enabling perpetual validation thereafter. These are also inherently protected from tampering due to the distributed nature of the networks. So far, there have been several different ways that new systems are utilizing these advantages. For example, supply chains would naturally benefit from these features, given their clear transactional schema and due to their interconnected complexity. Blockchain technology even enables new disruptive forms of exchange in the form of cryptocurrencies, which ensures even further disruption of …

Metaverse platforms refute 'misinformation' about daily active users
Ethereum (ETH) blockchain-based Metaverse projects Decentraland (MANA) and Sandbox (SAND) have hit back at reports suggesting low daily user activity on platforms, arguing a “misinformed” metric was used to measure each of the platforms' Daily Active Users (DAU). The controversy appears to have come from data originating from DappRadar, with observers suggesting the Decentraland metaverse sees 30 Daily Active Users despite having over $1.2 billion in market cap. Binance Oracle network to bridge Web3 and blockchains via smart contracts
Crypto exchange Binance announced the launch of a new data feed network — Binance Oracle — that allows blockchain smart contracts to connect with real-world data, starting with its in-house blockchain offering, BNB Chain. For starters, Binance Oracle will allow existing decentralized applications (DApps) and Web3 ecosystem partners on BNB Chain to access existing data sources and advanced computations. “Over ten BNB Chain projects have already integrated with the Binance Oracle network,” confirmed Binance. The ability to connect smart contracts with off-chain data will be made available for other blockchains in due time. Explaining the network’s importance, investment director at …
