Study: Crypto Mining Consumes More Energy Than Mineral Mining

Published at: Nov. 6, 2018

A recent study by scientific journal Nature Sustainability published Nov. 5, reveals that crypto mining consumes more energy than mineral mining to produce the same market value.

Scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education conducted a study to evaluate how much energy is consumed by mining cryptocurrencies in comparison to aluminium, copper, gold, platinum and rare earth oxides.

The scientists reviewed the period from Jan.1, 2016, to June 30, 2018, and found that the mining of Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC) and Monero (XMR) consumed an average of 17, 7, 7 and 14 megajoules (MJ) to generate one U.S. dollar, respectively.

In comparison, mining aluminium, copper, gold, platinum and rare earth oxides consumed 122, 4, 5, 7 and 9 MJ to generate the same value. These findings indicate that mineral mining, with the exception of aluminium and some oxides, draws less energy than crypto.

Moreover, the dataset for the study shows that energy consumption for three of four mentioned digital currencies — BTC, ETH and LTC — tends to grow from year to year. For instance, in 2016 BTC needed 17 MJ to generate one U.S. dollar, but now it consumes 19 MJ.

The report states that the energy requirements per dollar will continue to increase. The scientists conclude that over the three years included in study, mining was responsible for 3–15 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

High energy consumption is considered by some to be an “Achilles Heel” for major cryptocurrencies. According to a February report, crypto mining in Iceland was expected consume more energy than households in 2018.

In May, economist Alex de Vries, who published an article on “Bitcoin’s Growing Energy Problem,” claimed that BTC mining will use 0.5 percent of the world’s energy by 2018.

However, U.S. clean energy expert Katrina Kelly later challenged those predictions, stating that the debate was “oversimplified.” Kelly noted that Iceland, for example, mostly relies on renewable sources of energy, meaning that bitcoins mined there would have a neutral carbon footprint.

Ignore the headlines — Bitcoin mining is already greener than you think
Is it possible to mine Bitcoin (BTC) using only 100% renewable energy sources and deliver the same economic returns as those using carbon-based sources? The answer is yes, according to Square’s recent analysis on the cost of renewables and their impact on Bitcoin mining. Unfortunately for our industry, the number of headlines and headline-making tweets about Bitcoin’s energy use and potential environmental impact has followed its rise in value in recent months. The increased media scrutiny has led to increased calls for regulatory action and even a proposed bill in the New York State Senate that would place a three-year …

New York State Regulators Approve New Power Rate Structure for Crypto Miners
New York state regulators have approved a new electricity rate scheme for cryptocurrency miners that will allow them to negotiate contracts, Bloomberg reported July 12. According to Bloomberg, several months ago the state of New York gave permission to 36 municipal power authorities to charge crypto miners more than other consumers. The Massena municipal utility will introduce a new rate structure for crypto miners who are interested in conducting operations there. The utility will consider contracts on a case-by-case basis, which will protect other utility customers from increased rates. New York State Department of Public Service Chair John Rhodes said …

Enterprise blockchain to play a pivotal role in creating a sustainable future
Bitcoin (BTC) is often used to criticize all blockchain-based projects. This is understandable since Bitcoin was the first project to use a blockchain, is arguably the most recognizable and is the largest cryptocurrency by market cap. In the first half of this article, I will use Bitcoin as a proxy for all blockchain-based projects because most people associate blockchain with Bitcoin. Anything environmentally positive that can be said about Bitcoin will be doubly true for the vast majority of newer blockchain-based projects since Bitcoin uses the oldest version of blockchain technology. Blockchain energy consumption Bitcoin has been attacked for high …

Bitcoin miners believe global hash rate to grow ‘aggressively’
Bitcoin (BTC) seems to be on everyone’s mind lately as the world recently witnessed the price of BTC take a rather unexpected bearish turn this month. On January 21, 2022, Bitcoin reached six-month lows, sinking below $40,000 for the first time in months. While some panicked, other industry experts pointed out that the Bitcoin network has become verifiably stronger than ever before. The growth of the Bitcoin network has become apparent, as hash rate figures for BTC continue to set new highs this month. For example, on Jan. 22, the BTC network recorded an all-time high of 26.643 trillion with …

Bitcoin miners look to software to help balance the Texas grid
Although Bitcoin (BTC) mining remains a controversial topic, it’s becoming more common to hear how Bitcoin mining can help balance grid demand. This is being demonstrated in the state of Texas, as Bitcoin miners are able to participate in demand response programs, which incentivize miners to turn off their operations during peak demand. A spokesperson from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) — the organization that operates Texas’s electrical grid — told Cointelegraph that crypto loads can have impacts on the grid just like any large load. Yet, they noted that crypto miners can help stabilize the grid by …
