Mystery shoppers reveal that banks are struggling with COVID-19 response

Published at: Sept. 18, 2020

A recent study examined the response of the 15 leading North American banks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers discovered that tellers only at three banks wore masks 100% of the time.

Participants visited 700 bank branches across the continent belonging to leading institutions, such as Bank of America, Chase, Citibank and TD Bank. Overall, these 15 banks operate over 33,000 branches.

It appears that the ATMs present the sorest point for the banks. The ATMs in only 19% of the examined U.S. branches had a sanitizer available, and only 20% of the branches were equipped with dividers between the ATMs. Canadian branches did not fair much better either.

Another major criticism comes from the fact that the banks are not doing enough to inform and nudge their customers toward alternative banking channels. Only 22% of the branches were inviting their customers to use online banking instead, and only 15% were suggesting the use of ATMs instead of interactions with the tellers.

Meanwhile, the teller area was being cleaned between customers in only 19% of the surveyed branches, and the ATMs were cleaned between use in only 7% of the branches.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made the case for contactless payments, including cryptocurrency, as pressing as ever. The United States lags behind many nations when it comes to contactless payments. It is unlikely a coincidence that during the pandemic, the 14 leading global banks have lost $635 billion in market capitalization.

Banks must establish infrastructure for digital assets before it’s too late
The adoption of digital assets in traditional legacy systems is moving fast. In the middle of the year, the digital asset custody industry saw welcome developments when the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency officially announced that all nationally chartered banks in the United States can provide custody services for cryptocurrencies. The move, while positive for the ecosystem, is yet to be accompanied by a rigorous assessment of its technological infrastructure, like asking questions such as: Where are these newly acquired digital assets stored? One thing is clear: We have entered a new paradigm of finance that requires a …

The Remote Work Renaissance Will Demand Decentralized Technology
Milton Friedman called it the tyranny of the status quo. It is a resistance to change that imprisons us in the moment and blinds us to potential. Yet, despite it all, innovation proves inevitable and change is often thrust upon us, quickly transforming the norm. We subsequently acclimate to the change to which we first resisted and suddenly find that going back is incomprehensible. At times, this transformation happens slowly, other times quickly, but not since the world wars and the Spanish Flu has the world been forced to adapt as quickly as it has in response to the COVID-19 …

US Education Department promotes putting student records on blockchain
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed flaws across various sectors. As a result, a number of government departments are evaluating blockchain-based systems as possible solutions for challenges involving multiparty workflows, record-keeping, transparency and more. For example, the United States Department of Education recently provided funding for the launch of the “Education Blockchain Initiative.” Referred to as the EBI, this project is led by the American Council on Education — an organization that helps the higher education community shape effective public policy — and is designed to identify ways that blockchain can improve data flow between academic institutions and potential employers. Determined …
