New FTX documentary to spotlight SBF-CZ relationship

Published at: Feb. 1, 2023

The FTX saga and the developments that led to the crypto exchange's collapse will be framed in a new documentary focusing on the volatile relationship between Sam Bankman-Fried and one of his fiercest critics, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the production is a partnership between media outlet Fortune and Unrealistic Ideas, a non-scripted production company co-founded by American actor Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Archie Gips.

"The tumultuous relationship between SBF and CZ has played out to a certain extent in articles and on Twitter, but this definitive documentary will give people a 360 degree personal look at the entire FTX saga,” noted Fortune editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell in a statement shared with Cointelegraph.

The documentary will focus on how Bankman-Fried, born into a prominent academic family with political connections, and Zhao, whose family fled from China to Canada when he was 12, came to be two of the most relevant figures in the crypto space, and how their relationship alternated between being allies and rivals.

For a brief recap, Zhao was at the epicenter of FTX's dramatic collapse. At the beginning of November 2022, the Binance CEO publicly disclosed plans to liquidate the company's entire position in FTX's native token, FTT (FTT).

According to CZ, the decision reflected "post-exit risk management" due to “recent revelations" around FTX. At the time, he also argued that Binance “won’t support people who lobby against other industry players behind their backs.”

FTX experienced a massive bank run as a result of CZ's comments. Zhao's move was crucial to further investigations regarding FTX's management of funds with its sister company, Alameda Research.

Another noteworthy moment in the relationship between the crypto entrepreneurs came to light on Dec. 14. In a hearing before the United States Senate committee, investor Kevin O'Leary provided details about conversations with Bankman-Fried in the days before FTX filed for bankruptcy.

O'Leary noted in the hearing that "these two [SBF and CZ] in an unregulated market [...] With this incredible business in terms of growth were at war with each other, and one put the other out of business, intentionally."

The rise and fall of Bankman-Fried's crypto empire are the topics of several film projects. As reported by Cointelegraph, Amazon’s video streaming service Prime is producing an eight-episode limited series about the scandals behind the crypto exchange. Author and financial journalist Michael Lewis, known for his book The Big Short, had spent six months with Bankman-Fried before FTX implosion, and reportedly sold the book rights to Apple.

Binance’s victory over FTX means more users moving away from centralized exchanges
Based on the joint statements on Twitter this week from Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao and FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried, it seems clear that FTX has serious solvency problems — so dire that few in the market are willing to save it. As a result, FTX is turning to CZ as a prospective buyer. After CZ exposed FTX’s problems earlier in the week by announcing his plan to dump $500 million of its FTX Token (FTT) on the market, the companies said on Nov. 8 that they had entered into a nonbinding agreement for Binance to purchase FTX. It’s …

FTX crisis feeds the Twitter rumor mill with hot takes and conspiracy theories
Events are unfolding fast as the cryptocurrency market is rocked again, this time by FTX. Facts and non-facts are hard to sort out under these conditions, especially since both seem to be depegged from believability at times. Where’s the money and who’s to blame are popular talking points. Some of the information appearing is indisputably false, or at least highly speculative. The situation has given rise to the opportunity to tell wild tales, such as this tweet that appeared (and disappeared) on Nov 10: A very fake tweet, which has since been deleted. Note the username. Crypto Biz: Crypto’s day of reckoning has arrived
Who would’ve thought that the implosion of Terra, the collapse of Three Arrows Capital and the bankruptcies of Celsius and Voyager wouldn’t be the most terrible crypto stories of 2022? In retrospect, crypto’s day of reckoning — and the new low for the cycle — hadn’t arrived even after all these tumultuous events. The industry’s cyclical execution occurred this week when FTX — the world’s second-largest crypto exchange — was feared to be insolvent and on the brink of collapse. Those fears stemmed from FTX’s incestuous relationship with Alameda Research, a trading firm founded by FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried — …

Binance CEO CZ on FTX crash: “We’ve been set back a few years”
Crypto exchange FTX joined many other fallen projects — including Terra (LUNA), 3AC, Celsius and Voyager — in filing for bankruptcy in 2022. Owing to the devastation caused by multi-billion dollar losses suffered by businesses and investors, the man running the biggest crypto exchange, Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, envisions an era of greater regulatory scrutiny in the near future. With one of the biggest crypto businesses falling overnight, CZ believed the episode was devastating for the industry, which took away a lot of consumer confidence. Speaking at Indonesia Fintech Summit 2022, he said: “I think basically we've been set …

Only 1% of people can handle crypto self-custody right now: Binance CEO
Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao has cautioned the crypto community about self-custody, suggesting that 99% of people choosing to self-custody their crypto will likely lose it one way or another. CZ has been been a supporter of self-custody for years, referring to its as a “fundamental human right” but has always urged users to “do it right.” He published a “CZ’s Tips” on self-storing crypto in Feb. 2020. During a recent Binance-run Twitter Spaces on Dec. 14, the Binance CEO continued to urge caution for those using self-custody wallets — suggesting that more often than not, security keys are not …
