Binance Crypto Exchange Adds Four Trading Pairs for Russian Ruble

Published at: Dec. 2, 2019

Major cryptocurrency exchange Binance listed four Russian ruble trading pairs, according to an announcement on Dec. 2.

The first trading pairs featuring the ruble include Binance Coin (BNB), Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and XRP. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao commented on the development in a tweet sent the same day.

Binance’s addition of trading pairs follows the introduction of ruble trading on the platform in late October when Zhao announced that users could then deposit and withdraw fiat funds in rubles.

Zhao has previously lauded Russia’s position as an important jurisdiction for the crypto and blockchain industries, recognizing the wealth of computer science talent in Russia, and going so far as calling President Vladimir Putin the most influential person in the blockchain industry.

New additions

Rubble support and trading pairs are the latest in a series of new features and assets added to the platform over the last few months. In November alone, Binance added support for the Turkish lira and also became the first exchange to add the Fiat Gateway developed by stablecoin operator Paxos.

In late October, the exchange also launched support for the Nigerian naira. According to Coinmarketcap, over the last 24 hours, the currency has seen a little over $43,000 in trading volume against Bitcoin, and nearly $25,000 against stablecoin Binance USD (BUSD).

Fierce competition

Meanwhile, competitor cryptocurrency trading platforms to Binance are also expanding their scope of operations. As Cointelegraph reported in mid-November, Bitcoin futures trading on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE)’s Bakkt platform will expand to include a cash-settled option.

In mid-November, crypto exchange OKEx launched Bitcoin futures contracts that are margined with the Tether (USDT) stablecoin.

Just looking at Binance Coin’s (BNB) reported market capitalization, one might conclude that the token is the dominant asset when compared to other exchange tokens. Although there is no direct relationship between Binance’s exchange volume (or revenue) and token economics, traders seem to use it as a proxy. The controversial burn mechanism has been losing impact since April 2019, when the exchange changed the BNB white paper. Initially, the white paper proposed a plan where BNB tokens equivalent to 20% of the exchange’s profit would be bought under a “repurchasing plan,” but the new version scrapped that plan. However, excluding …

Price analysis 1/20: BTC, ETH, DOT, XRP, ADA, LTC, BCH, LINK, XLM, BNB
When an asset is in an overbought condition and traders are sitting on large profits, even minor negative news and events could trigger profit-booking. This seems to have happened following Janet Yellen’s adverse comments on cryptocurrencies during a virtual hearing with the U.S. Senate Finance Committee. In the same meeting, Yellen also told Congress to “act big” in order to support the U.S. economy. Another round of stimulus would probably further weaken the U.S. dollar and drive investors into assets that are considered as a store of value. This means Yellen's comments may have inadvertently boosted the sentiment surrounding gold …

The top 100 richest Bitcoin (BTC) addresses have added 334,000 Bitcoin to their existing holdings over the past 30 days, a clear signal that whales and institutional-size investors bought the dip. A positive sign is that most of them have not reacted to the recent fall in Bitcoin’s price. This suggests that large investors are bullish on Bitcoin for the long term rather than looking to make a quick gain. An important element in the recent rally is many of the purchases have come from institutional investors who were critical of Bitcoin in the past. The list is likely to …

How crypto execs react to economic sanctions against Russia?
As the West and America tighten their economic sanctions on Russia, concerns have emerged about how this will affect the cryptocurrency market. Executives at crypto exchanges have weighed in on the sanctions and their possible effects. The CEO of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, went on Twitter to voice his opinion on the subject.
