Google Play Store Takes Down Crypto News Apps, Including Cointelegraph’s

Published at: March 2, 2020

Google’s Play Store for Android smartphone apps seems to have taken an issue with reporting on cryptocurrencies and blockchain news, taking down several notable apps, including ours.

The newest block?

As of 2:00 PM EST, apps of crypto news sites including Cointelegraph and CoinDesk were unavailable on the Play Store.

Google did not contact Cointelegraph regarding the planned removal. We have reached out to the company but received no response as of press time. This article will be updated with new information or comment from the company should we receive it.

For Cointelegraph’s part, we have been operating much as we always have, and do not readily have an explanation for why the app is no longer available.

Earlier targeting of crypto

This is not the first time that the Play Store has set its sights on crypto. Near the end of December, the store took down an app for MetaMask. At the time, MetaMask co-lead developer Dan Findlay told Cointelegraph:

“I very much hope that this was an honest mistake on the part of Google's reviewers, but in combination with all the crypto YouTube bans, it definitely puts me at disease about how Google is engaging with decentralizing technologies.”

Findlay was referring to Youtube’s then-ongoing ban on crypto content, which, though it lasted only a few days, made major waves in the community.

The Google Play store had also previously banned several crypto mining apps.

El Salvador’s Bitcoin wallet is ‘95% fixed,’ President Bukele says
Just a week after Bitcoin (BTC) became legal tender in El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele has admitted that the rollout of the state Bitcoin wallet was too much of a challenge. Chivo, El Salvador’s official Bitcoin wallet, has temporarily disabled new registrations and halted app downloads for new smartphone models due to ongoing issues with the app, Bukele said on Twitter late Monday. “Both things will be enabled until the application has no errors,” the president noted, adding that the Chivo team expects to resume registrations and downloads in a couple more days. “The technical errors of the Chivo wallet …

Bans and brands: What centralization does to businesses
The failures of centralization in protecting individual and business data have been highlighted repeatedly over the past few years. Facebook, Google, Twitter, Microsoft, Sony and many more have all faced large-scale data hacks that have exposed the private information (and more) of their customers. The problem is not just data theft — banks, financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges have all suffered at the hands of malicious actors. Yet, huge amounts of information about our lives and livelihoods are still entrusted to centralized organizations, simply because that has always been the way things are done. With the onset of Web 3.0, …
