Mariah Carey buys Bitcoin, hopes to empower fans through education

Published at: Oct. 19, 2021

Pop icon Mariah Carey is the latest celebrity to embrace Bitcoin (BTC) through the Winklevoss-led Gemini cryptocurrency exchange, offering another sign that digital assets are becoming mainstream.

In a video message to her 10.2 million Instagram followers, Carey announced Tuesday that she is partnering with Gemini to boost Bitcoin adoption and support girls of color in their pursuit of STEM degrees — a broad education category that refers to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

In the video, Carey confirmed that she invests in Bitcoin through Gemini. She also gave her fans a referral code to redeem $20 in free BTC.

“Did you know you don’t need to buy a whole Bitcoin to invest? In fact, you can buy as little as $5,” she said.

Carey credited Cryptopedia, Gemini’s free education platform, for teaching her about cryptocurrency investing.

Users who sign up through the referral link and begin trading on Gemini will be contributing directly to Black Girls Code, a non-profit organization that provides technology education for African-American girls.

While early crypto investors were considered ahead of their time for investing in Bitcoin before the major financial institutions, a large segment of the market is heavily influenced by celebrity endorsements. In September, a Morning Consult survey of 2,200 United States adults found that 45% of crypto holders would seek exposure to a cryptocurrency if it is endorsed by someone famous.

Celebrities have become highly influential in the budding nonfungible token (NFT) market, which has attracted billions of dollars in investment this year alone. Despite the frothy hype, Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin believes celebrities can push the NFT market toward socially relevant causes.

Top 5 cryptocurrencies to watch this week: BTC, MANA, MKR, ZEC, KCS
Bitcoin (BTC) has been relatively calm during the weekend as crypto traders try to rebuild the markets after the Terra LUNA debacle. With macro factors not supportive, several analysts expect the recovery to be a slow grind. Crypto research firm Delphi Digital said in a recent report that the rally in the United States dollar index (DXY) had pushed its 14-month relative strength index “above 70 for the first time since its late 2014 to 2016 run up.” Historically, 11 out of 14 such instances had resulted in the DXY rising about 5.7% over the following 12 months. If the …

Bitcoin’s big month: Did US institutions prevail over Asian retail traders?
Bitcoin experienced the second-strongest January in its history — and the best since 2013 — rising nearly 40% amid wide reports that institutional investors were back on board. Zhong Yang Chan, head of research at CoinGecko, told Cointelegraph that there were “net institutional inflows into digital asset funds in January 2023, particularly in the last two weeks, with Bitcoin the largest beneficiary.” Meanwhile, a Jan. 30 CoinShares blog noted that the total assets under management in digital asset investment products — a good gauge of institutional participation — had risen to $28 billion, led by Bitcoin (BTC), which was up …
